Abstract
The main mission of the university, considering its central role in the growth and excellence of society, is to strive for academic advancement and prevent or intervene in students' academic problems and challenges. The aim of this study was to conduct a phenomenological analysis of academic failure based on the lived experiences of undergraduate students. The research method in this study, considering the qualitative nature of the research and the participants in this study, was probationary students of Allameh Tabatabaei University of Tehran. According to the rule of theoretical saturation, 16 people were interviewed and the data were analyzed using the content analysis approach and the Claise method. A total of 256 themes were extracted, which were categorized according to the common meanings and concepts and 17 main categories and 88 subcategories. In order to have a more comprehensive and practical understanding, the main categories were grouped into four general categories: 1) factors affecting academic failure; 2) preventive requirements for academic failure; 3) effective interventions for academic failure; and 4) consequences of academic failure. All themes were organized into a core theme titled; "Academic dropout is a multidimensional phenomenon of academic-identity disconnection in which the student loses his/her meaningful connection with the learning process, the educational system, the future outlook, and the support network of family and society."
